Besides the Pyramids, Egypt owns a very mysterious and intriguing location that has enigmatic attraction to tourists, that is the “ghost town” in Cairo.

Lots of native people here consider the “ghost town” as a manifestation of social classes division in the society. The crowdedness, the closeness and the expensiveness of Cairo caused a portion of paupers and criminals to reside here.

They live in the same land together with the rested souls. That explains why the tombs are everywhere, in the houses, on the alleys, on the roads, even in markets and children’s schools.

According to the anthropologist Yakan, the Egyptians ideated the tombs as not fully belong to the dead, but a start for life. Therefore, throughout history, the residents considered the custom of living together with the ghosts on the same land very normal, even bringing much of good luck.

The tombs guardians of the city are also graded into 2 types, the majority being guardians for other people’s tombs, only some are guardians for their own ancestors and relatives’ tombs and live together on the same area.

Although there are many problems existing in this town such as environmental concern, or low living conditions, people still feel satisfied with their present lives. “The atmosphere is peaceful, with plenty of trees and no house renting fee, and the electricity and water support are sufficient”, a resident praised his current neighborhood. The Egyptian government is making every effort to improve the facility and security for the “ghost town” to make this place a tourist attraction.
