3. Where to go?
Most travellers to Algeria visit the Southern part of the country. This place has many famous sightseeings like Algiers, Oran or Sahara desert. Once travelled to the capital city Algiers, tourists may see the ruins of ancient cities like Djemila, Timgad and especially Tipasa. All are still in their good shapes until this day, thanks to the roughly dry climate of this area. Algeria was turned into a commercial trading area since the middle of 19th century. Many constructions from that period still exist from then on. But the most famous structure here is the Maghrab with zig-zag roads, Islamic mosque, schools and houses built in the Turkish architectural style with large squares. There are also Ethnic Museum, Folk Art Museum and National Art Museum. They are museums among the most interesting ones in North Africa.

If tourists love to walk, they can go to beaches in Algiers. They have very nice resorts there, one of which is Zeralda with houses simulating the architecture of gypsies. The Tipasa neighbourhood has ancient city Roma, Christianity towns and Numidian Mausoleum.

To the East of Algiers, tourists will meet the Turquoise beach with amazing bay-like areas filled with rocks and endless shores. They will have the chance to take a voyage on boats and take part in active water games.

The Sidi Fregj peninsula has a cruise harbour which was once an on-water opera house for tourists to visit.

On the Western shores around Oran city, you cannot miss the trip to famous Sahara desert. This desert is barely populated, most tourists travel here in winter. The Sahara desert of Africa is the largest desert in the world. There is no vegetation or water here, only the golden colour of the sand is visible. The motels here are convenient but these are very rare in oases. If you want to travel here during high touring season, it is best to book the rooms in advance. The place which is usually chosen as the starting location is Laghouat. On the desert, it is scorching with the burning sunlight while at night there are freezing breezes blowing all over the place. If staying on the desert for the night, tourists will have to light up a fire and cuddle into special sleeping bags because of the extreme cold. No one can say travelling to deserts is not interesting once enjoyed the night there among a circle of friends in the warmth of fire, watching the stars and listening to sounds of desert…

4. Shopping and prices.

The currency unit of Algeria is Dinar.

Some Algerians, especially those who live in the countryside, offer prices in Centim rather than Dinar. One Dinar equals 100 Centims. So tourists might misunderstand the difference in prices here. The problem usually arises when they cut out the thousand unit from the price. For example, if they offer the price of 130, it means 130,000 Centims, and 1300 Dinars. Money exchanging here is not a hard thing to do. You can easily exchange in big hotels or banks. Tourism cheques are also approved in Algeria. However, credit cards are only accepted in international hotels. It is best for you to exchange into Dinar for daily expenses even though some places may accept U.S dollar payment.

5. Other notions.

Due to the unstable situation in Algeria, the travelling industry has limited aspects. You should not travel alone here.

If you travel to Sahara desert, it is suggested that you hire a tourguide with you in case you get lost or get kidnapped.

There are plenty of checkpoints on the desert, so in order to avoid troubles, you should go with a group instead of going alone.

Although the situation in Algeria is improved, you should be aware of sudden bombing attacks even in public places such as markets, buses, train stations…

The least safe area is in the North, and it is best for you not to travel to this place.

The best and safest way to travel in Algeria is by airplanes with a group of people, although it is much more expensive. Travelling on Sahara desert can cause many troubles like lack of fuel, sandstorms or even worse, encountering with robbers. Ask for detailed information before taking off, and prepare yourself to deal with unfortunate situations.
